SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - South Portland Police say they have summonsed two 15-year-old students from South Portland High School with cruelty to animals after a video posted on Twitter showing the girls putting a kitten into a microwave.
Officials say that the 8 week old kitten is not displaying any ill effects at this time, but that the owners have agreed to turn the cat over to South Portland's Animal Control Officer who will be getting a formal veterinary evaluation.
Police say on Friday, they received numerous reports that a video was posted on Twitter that appeared to show two teenage females, reportedly students from South Portland, putting a cat in a microwave. As of Monday, after an investigation, two 15-year old female South Portland High School students were issued summonses for Cruelty to Animals. Police say their names and identifying information are being withheld due to their age.
Police also say that the incident has prompted a widespread response on social media that strongly condemning the actions. South Portland Police stresses that the matter is being addressed and referred to the Juvenile Justice System. They thank those who reported this matter to the department, and would ask for the public's patience in letting the system do its job.
