PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials in Portland say a gas leak Thursday forced the evacuation of 44 from a neighborhood near Payson Park.

Officials say a backhoe doing some excavation work severed a two inch gas main around 2:30 in the afternoon. The homes evacuated were on Front, Johansen, and Illsey Streets. Portland Fire officials say the constructions crews did exactly what they should have in the situation -- they called 911 immediately.

Central Maine Power had to shut off electricity to about 1,100 customers in the area.
