ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A woman in Ellsworth is lucky to be alive today after a train smashed engine first into the driver's side of her vehicle Monday afternoon. The woman amazingly walked away from the accident with only minor injuries.
Police responded to the accident on Davis Street in Ellsworth, just after 2PM. That's around the time when 25-year-old Gabriella Just of Ellsworth drove her 2005 Subaru Sedan into the path of the Downeast Scenic Railroad train. According to police, Just failed to notice the train that had it's lights on. Investigators say the train's horn and bell were also working. The woman walked away from the accident with just minor bumps and bruises. A lucky outcome in the opinion of Ellsworth Police Officer, Kelvin Mote.
"The car actually ended up facing the way it was coming on the other side of the tracks, so it got dragged quite a ways," said Mote. "About 20 feet."
There have been no charges filed in connection to the train accident. Ellsworth police have ruled driver inattention as the cause.
