LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Two central Maine cities are inviting residents to take part in citizen police academies that will provide them with an inside look and working knowledge of the police departments.

The Auburn Police Department is offering a 10-week Citizens Police Academy that meets for 2 ½ hours each week beginning Sept. 16 and will cover subjects such as use of force, drunken-driving enforcement, domestic violence and crime scene investigation. The neighboring city of Lewiston is also offering a 10-week program beginning Sept. 19.

The programs aim to offer instruction and information on various aspects of law enforcement, but they don't train participants to be police officers.

Class sizes are limited, and police say people with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds won't be accepted.
