PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There was a brand new union represented at the annual Southern Maine Labor Day Breakfast.
The Southern Maine Labor Council holds an annual breakfast for unions and their workers. This year, the Maine Lobstermen's Union joined the celebration. The new union formed this year and held its first official meeting last month. Since then they have recruited hundreds of lobstermen and held meetings up and down the coast. Union President Rocky Alley says it has not been easy convincing traditionally independent fishermen to unionize, but they are making progress.
"A lot of people are coming to the meetings and leaving saying, 'This is the only way it's going to work,'" Alley said. "We've got to organize as a union. Numbers work, and what the union has to offer by joining is far more than we could do individually."
The Maine Lobstermen's Union is part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
