BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Democrats will keep a vacant state senate seat in Sagadahoc county.

Eloise Vitelli has won a special election for the seat formerly held by Senate Majority Leader Seth Goodall, who resigned to take a new job. Turnout was high for a special election, with more than 31% of registered voters casting ballots.

Here are the resutls:

Vitelli-- 50% Republican Paula Benoit- 47%- and Green Independent Daniel Stromgrom 3%

Republicans and Democrats fought hard for this seat. Some Democrats have argued that a win in this race would represent a repudiation of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, one that could carry over into next year's gubernatorial election.
