Police investigate fatal crash in New Vineyard

NEW VINEYARD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police are investigating a fatal car crash that happened Friday morning in the Franklin County town of New Vineyard.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said 57-year-old William Ellsworth from Farmington was driving his van on Route 27 in New Vineyard when it crossed the center line and crashed into a tractor trailer coming in the other direction head-on.  The accident happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said Ellsworth was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the tractor trailer, who has been identified as 27-year-old Daniel French from Alfred, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities said both vehicles were totaled in the crash.  Route 27 was shut down for several hours Friday as police were investigating the accident.

Police said they aren't sure what caused the crash but it remains under investigation.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Farmington and New Vineyard Fire Departments, Maine State Police, and DEP officials all assisted on scene Friday.
