PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- According to some legal experts, access to benefits can mean the difference between stability and homelessness for veterans.
That's why volunteer lawyers held a free veterans clinic in Portland Saturday.
Lawyers from the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, and the Maine Commission for Community Service met with veterans at the Portland Public Library.
They were able to offer advice about everything from medical benefits to home loan assistance.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree urged veterans in Southern Maine who need help with VA forms and appeals to take part.
A representative from Pine Tree Legal stated the program has helped more than 50 veterans at similar events in the past year.
