CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Less than four months ago, an attack on the Boston Marathon shocked the nation. Karen Rand was one of hundreds that were injured in the explosions near the finish line. She lost her good friend, and her left leg that day.

Those who were a part of that race, or who were there cheering on friends, will never forget April 15.

But runners didn't dwell on the past for long. Today's Beach to Beacon race was about moving forward.

And for Karen Rand, it was about getting her life back.

"My boyfriend Kevin wanted to run today just to get us right back in there," Rand said. "He thought it would be a good idea for me to start the race and just get back to living, because that's what we really need to do."

She has the support of the thousands of racers; people of all ages and many different abilities. They are taking to the pavement to show that they won't live in fear. They will keep running.
