ROQUE BLUFFS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Here's an update on what's being done in the town of Roque Bluffs, south of Machias, scene of the tragic accident, where two women -- Amy Stiner of Machias and Melissa Moyer from Pennsylvania -- drowned after one of them drove the mini-van they were in down a boat ramp and into Pond Cove, on a foggy and rainy night.
The only sign warning that night that the road would soon end was a small "pavement ends" sign that was partially obscured by foliage. We went back there today and saw that there's now another warning sign sitting next to it that says "danger, road ends."
There are also spray painted markers that measure off 300 feet before the boat landing, where the road actually ends, and where the boat ramp begins its descent into the water.
At a meeting of town leaders tonight, the members of the select board declined to comment on what else will be done to make that end of the road safer. They say it is still under review.
Select person Lisa Hanscom did say during the meeting that the town has no money in its road account that is used for road repairs.
