WELLS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Wells police are investigating an unconfirmed shark sighting.

Police say a person fishing off the Wells jetty reported seeing the shark around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police deployed boats in the area to see if the supposed shark reappeared. The Maine Marine Patrol has also been made aware of the possible sighting. So far, neither of them have seen a shark.

No beaches are closed and Wells police say there is no threat to the public.

Police say members of the public should report any possible sightings in the area to them or Maine Marine Patrol.

Wells Police also posted on their Facebook page:

"It is not uncommon to see sharks in the area during the summer. Our response to these sightings involves identifying the type of shark, the number of sharks, their size, proximity to shore, and direction of travel. From a public safety standpoint, that is useful information to have. Lifeguards will alert beachgoers if conditions warrant. This post is just a reminder that we are swimming in their home. Future shark sightings can be reported to Wells Dispatch at 207-646-9354, or the closest lifeguard. For emergencies, dial 9-1-1."
