Officials say around 9pm, the two women had become lost near the Roque Bluffs State Park hiking trails. The Maine Warden Service had been conducting a search to find them. Wardens had contacted a nearby landowner, who is also a firefighter and a member of Sunrise Search & Rescue. He volunteered to drive his ATV down to the shore line in to help find the women.
After a short time, the landowner told Wardens he had found the two women and their dog. He gave each of the women rides to a residence on the shore where the Maine Warden Service picked them up and transported them back to their vehicle at the state park.
Wardens say at that time the women drove towards the road, but around 10pm the Warden Service received a call that the women had driven their car into the water. Officials say the GPS coordinates from the phone placed them almost a mile from where they were last seen.
Officials say multiple crews searched for the women and their vehicle and eventually the vehicle was located underwater about 175 feet off the Pond Cove boat ramp.
Washington County Sheriff Department say both women were inside the vehicle. They're investigating it as a fatal motor vehicle accident. They also say a dog was lost in accident.
Sheriff Smith says it was a very rainy and foggy night. Amy Stiner of Machias was driving at the time, and she was also pregnant. Sheriff Smith said the boat launch could easily be mistaken for the road, especially in a period of low visibility.
