SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Bon-Ton operates 270 stores nationwide, and its getting ready to open a department store here in Maine, bringing with it 200 new jobs.
The company has corporate headquarters in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The department stores sells clothing, jewelry, and cosmetics. The Maine Mall store is set to open in September, and the company is holding job fairs this week and in August to recruit new employees.
"We've been very pleased with this turnout so far, and we're very excited," Bon-Ton Store Manager Charlene Brunner said. "We're looking for friendly, energetic people that can help us deliver on that message."
Susan Larrivee was one of several people who showed up at Thursday's job fair. She made it through to the second round of interviews.
"I would like to either be a cashier or work in their jewelry department," Larrivee said.
Larrivee has prior customer service experience working at Ames, and she said at the job fair Thursday she's grateful such a big company is coming to Maine.
"I think anything that's coming and bringing new jobs and giving people an opportunity to find employment is great," Larrivee added.
Thursday was the first of several Bon-Ton job fairs at the Maine Mall in the coming weeks.
The company will be holding job fairs Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Bon-Ton will also be back in two weeks to hold a second round of job fairs in August. Those are scheduled for August 1-2nd from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and August 3rd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Company officials said applicants should apply prior to attending the job fair on Bon-Ton's careers website.
