FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) - A Farmington woman escaped serious injury when half a manhole cover flew into her windshield.
Police say 27-year-old Sierra McGraw was driving south on Route 2 on Wednesday morning when the split manhole cover flew up from the road and struck the support beam between her windshield and driver's side window, splitting the metal and shattering the glass.
She did not require hospitalization, but was treated at the scene for scratches.
Police tell the Kennebec Journal they think a tractor-trailer drove over the manhole cover, splitting it and causing part of it to fly up.
The manhole was worked on recently, so it's possible the cover was not fitted securely, causing it to break when the truck hit it. The truck did not stop.
