NORTHEAST HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Sailboat racers took to the seas this afternoon to compete in the 17th annual Hospice Regatta.

Sailors of all ages in boats of all sizes came out to compete. The winners get a chance to represent Maine in the National Hospice Regatta later this year.

The annual sail boat race is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County. Last year, the event raised almost thirty thousand dollars for the non-profit.

Some participants said taking to the seas was the least they can do to help a worthy cause.

"We view it as a very important contribution as sailors that we can make, and have fun at the same time," said David Schroeder, a long time sailor and race participant. "We get great participation from all classes of boats."

Races will continue into tomorrow afternoon. An award ceremony and Hospice reception will be held at the Morris Yacht club at 5 PM tomorrow night.

The winners of today's 420 Race are as follows:

1st Place - Skye Ehrhart and crew Conner Ratcliff

2nd Place - Avery Weiss and crew Lily Anders

3rd Place - Orin Fox and crew Annie Wray

The winners of today's Optimus Race are as follows:

1st Place - Terra Ehrhart

2nd Place - Rocco Dendanto

3rd Place - Fiona Clunan
