GARDINER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There was a boat explosion and fire in Gardiner today.

A boat exploded in on the Kennebec River in Gardiner Friday morning. It happened this morning as four people were getting ready to take a ride on the Kennebec River.

The state fire marshal's office says the 23 foot Wellcraft had just been gassed up and it's likely some of the fuel got into the bilge.
When the engine was fired up, it sparked a fire and explosion.

Vickey Masse and Lilianne Davidson of Oakland were hurt.

They were sitting on either side of the engine compartment.
Their husbands were up front and were not hurt.

All four jumped into the river and were picked up by another boater.
