PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Workers are putting the finishing touches on the stage on the Eastern Promenade for a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks show, weather permitting.

A crowd of 50,000 is expected on the Munjoy Hill area of Portland where they will celebrate not only the Fourth of July but also President Abraham Lincoln. This is the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, so to mark that important Civil War event, Portland Mayor Michael Brennan and local historian, Herb Adams, will be reading excerpts of the Emancipation Proclamation and Declaration of Independence at noon. That will take place in front of the Longfellow House at 489 Congress Street.

Then the festivities move to the Eastern Promenade where the Portland Symphony Orchestra will begin performing at 7:40 PM. Headlining the show is "American Pie" singer, Don McLean.

At 9:20 PM, the fireworks will light up Casco Bay.

The city advises people to park as far away as possible from the Eastern Promenade and walk down. That will lessen the amount of traffic leaving the fireworks show at the end of the night.

This is the first year there will be no smoking allowed at the event.
