PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - FairPoint Communications has begun upgrading Maine's emergency call system to allow people statewide to seek help using text messages, not just voice calls.

When the job's done next summer, Maine will be among the first states to have a system in place enabling people statewide to send text messages to 911.

Maria Jacques (jayks) with the Maine Emergency Services Communications Bureau says the texting feature will bring immediate benefits for people who can't speak or hear.

Jacques says people will someday be able to send photos, video and enhanced data over the 911 network, which will change the way emergency information is shared among emergency responders and medical personnel.
