KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Children with special needs hit the beach to find therapy in the surf.

Three times a year, the Aquaholic Surf Shop invites special needs children to experience surfing. Tuesday, about 50 kids hit the waves. More than 100 volunteers from across Maine and as far south as Massachusetts were on hand to help. The program started eight years ago with just a few kids. It gives parents the chance to see just how much their children can accomplish.

"To see him out there with his face lighting up, there's no substitution for it" Scott Wentzell said about his son Scotty.

Aquaholics Surf Shop has been funding the program for the past eight years. Now organizers are hoping to get some help from the community.

They are trying to raise thirty-five thousand dollars through the website Indiegogo. The money would buy more wetsuits and surf boards, and a special shed where the kids could change.
