AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Two people are dead in a crash on Route 3 in Augusta. The accident involved a Togus Police vehicle, but the operator of that vehicle was not injured.

Augusta Police officials say the three-vehicle crash happened around 7:15am Monday.

Although it's early in the investigation, police say a vehicle traveling east on Route 3 crossed the center line striking the rear portion of the Togus Police vehicle. It went on to hit a second vehicle head-on.

45-year-old Dean James, the driver of the car that crossed the center line, died. James was from the town of China. The driver of the second westbound vehicle, 46-year-old Laura Hall, was also killed. Hall was from Liberty. Again, the driver of the Togus Police vehicle was not hurt.

The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office has been called in to reconstruct the accident. Augusta Police say the road has been closed since 7:30am.
