GLENBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Students at Glenburn Elementary School got a pretty special visitor on Monday who came to teach them about the benefits of taking on a healthy lifestyle.
Jared Fogle is known for the TV commercials he does for Subway Restaurants. He was able to turn his life around in the 1990s. He lost 245 pounds after struggling with obesity for years.
At one point Fogle weighed more than 400 pounds and was wearing pants with a 60 inch waist. He has been making trips to schools around the nation to make sure kids don't share the same fate. Fogle says he started putting weight on when he was in the third grade.
The Subway spokesman says with technology getting better kids are having a tougher time staying active and that can be a problem.
"On top of that...there's a lot more access to junk food," he said, "There's a lot more access to junk food in general that other people's generations have had too at a relatively low cost so it's just sort of a double whammy that we have to address."
Fogle also made a stop at Downeast School in Bangor on Monday. So far he says he's been able to maintain a healthy weight for the last 15 years. He reminded kids that to do that all they have to do is get outside, eat right and keep limits on the junk food.
