AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Governor LePage has signed into law a bill to tax internet sales.

The bill closes a loophole that allows large retailers without a heavy brick-and-mortar presence in the state to sell items without sales tax.

A study by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce and the Retail Association of Maine found Maine loses out on $19 million to $24 million in uncollected Internet sales tax every year.

The new law also let's Maine take part in the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement... that's a federal measure to simplify the sales tax code.
