AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A 92-year-old Augusta man is getting replacements for his long-lost World War II medals.
Donald Lucero is scheduled to receive the medals during a ceremony at the State House on Friday.
Lucero is a former prisoner of war who survived the Bataan Death March, during which thousands of U.S. and Filipino soldiers died while being forcibly marched by Japanese soldiers to a concentration camp in the Philippines. He received several medals for his valor, including two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and other citations.
The medals were lost over the years, and substitute medals are being provided by the military.
