Jenner was born on May 17, 1749.

He got the idea for the vaccine when he notice that milkmaids who tended to infected cows rarely came down with the human version of the disease.

In fact, before Jenner's discovery there was no such word as "vaccine."  It was derived from the Latin word "vacca," for cow.
