BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) - The National Park Service has worked with local Maine merchants to come up with a plan to open the Cadillac Mountain road earlier than planned.
Park officials said Monday that the portion of the Park Loop Road that provides access to the mountain will open for the season on Saturday, while other parts of the loop road remain closed until May 17 because of the federal budget cuts.
Atlantic Oceanside Hotel manager Julius Wilson tells WNSX-FM that merchants have offered to help out with portable toilet service, trash removal and road maintenance.
The first cruise ship of the season arrived Sunday in Bar Harbor to limited park service. Much the park is still accessible, including Ocean Drive as well as all carriage roads and most hiking trails.
