SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Despite a glitch in the race -- organizers say they still raised a lot of money for a good cause during what should have been a 5k this morning.

The Jimmy the Greek's Maine Mall 5k for Lyme Disease Awareness raised money to fight the disease.

The tick borne illness is increasing in Maine and can often go undiganosed -- mimicking other illnesses and causing severe pain.

400 runners lined up in support of the Maine-based charity, LimeBuddies, founded by two moms who have battled advanced Lyme Disease.

Runners finished the 5k in just under 2 miles, causing some confusion.... organizers say the Caution Driver leading the race accidentally took a wrong turn, ending things early.

After crossing the finish line, many ran an additional mile on their own accord and say Sunday's race isn't about the competition.
