PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A fire broke out at 86 Exchange Street in Portland's Old Port just before 10:00am Monday -- and it quickly developed into an all hands situation.

The fire was smoldering between the buildings -- sending smoke pouring into the apartments above businesses at street level. That made it difficult for fire crews to get at the fire and put it out. Fire fighters had to cut holes into the walls to extinguish the fire.

"These are the types of buildings that certainly make Portland unique," said Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria. "Being 1900-era buildings, they are tightly spaced and can result in very catastrophic fires."

Everyone was able to make it out of the buildings safely -- and no one was injured. Fire crews are working to determine whate started the fire.
