PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Dozens of couples in Maine attended a one-of-a-kind wedding expo in Portland Sunday.
The Rainbow Wedding Network has produced nearly 100 wedding shows around the country for same-gender couples.
This was the first one held in Portland -- and an important one --coming on the heels of same sex marriage being legalized in Maine.
"It's so refreshing for them to walk into the show that they don't get the question: are you sisters? Which one of you are planning the wedding?" says co-founder, Cindy Sproule. She says 35 to 37 Maine wedding vendors were chosen for the event.
"It's [being engaged] still all very special and that's all how we were treated here today," says Larry Kieft. "Even after 24 years and it's like it"s all brand-new again."
9 states and the Disctrict of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage. The Rainbow Wedding Network has held gay wedding expos in 22 states.
