WASHINGTON, D.C. - (NEWS CENTER) While members of Congress were preparing the nation for massive budget cuts over the last few months ... many apparently didn't curb their own spending on luxuries like lattes and catered lunches.
The Washington Guardian, a federal government watchdog group, just released an analysis of spending reports from the House of Representatives for the end of 2012. It shows some eye-popping expenses for food and drinks: House Speaker John Boehner racked up $2,200 in coffee supplies in the month of November alone. California Republican and Majority Whip Kevin Mc Carthy spent $2,500 ordering from a burritto restaurant ... in one day.
One of the most aggregious themes in spending was on bottled and filtered water: if you calculate it out over a year for the entire House of Representatives, it would total half a million dollars. As a taxpayer on the street quipped, "Don't they have water fountains?"
Maine Representatives Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud were frugal by comparison: Pingree and staff spent $631 on food and drink during the last three months of 2012. Michaud and staff spent $1,874.
