BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Last month high school basketball players said goodbye to the Bangor Auditorium when the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament wrapped up. Saturday, it was a group 56 years in the making that got to say their last goodbye.
Alumni players from 1956 to 1974 were invited to shoot around at the Auditorium one last time before the building is demolished in May. The Final Buzzer Shoot Around was organized by the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. Around 20 players spanning three decades of classes dating as far back as 1953 showed up to say their goodbyes to the building.
"I thought it be a good idea to get some people together and just have a last shoot around and give people one last chance to say good bye to the old girl," said the event's organizer Bill Burney.
Players shot around on the hardwood, as well as caught up with old friends they hadn't seen in decades. Reginal Dobbins graduated from Houlton High School in 1953. Though he never got the chance to play at "The Mecca", he finally made it on the floor Saturday.
"It's such an honor to be here with this great bunch of athletes," said Dobbins. "I couldn't believe so many of them remembered me."
Through out the day players from past years also visited the Auditorium to play one last time. Women's and Men's alumni games were held during the evening.
The court will be open to the public Sunday March 17th from Noon to 5:00pm.
