PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- As the India Street neighborhood continues to grow, the city is hearing feedback from the public about what changes they would like to see in the area.
An Initiative called Sustain Southern Maine is studying nine neighborhoods in the region using a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Saturday, city planners and consultants held an open house. Those who attended the meeting were asked to identify what types of development would be appropriate for the neighborhood. Planners want to know what they would change, and what they would preserve. Portland Senior Planner Bill Needelman says it's important that potential developers, city officials, and residents are all on the same page.
"The parking lots and empty lots that you see will probably be developed, and so it's a question of how that development happens and whether it meets the expectations and the desires and the vision of the neighborhood" Needelman said.
Sustain Southern Maine will reveal the results of its study in October.
