YARMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department now says no charges have been filed against a woman suspected of abducting her 18-month-old granddaughter.

Melanie Wever and the toddler, Hazel Richards, were visiting family in North Yarmouth with the permission of both the child's parents. While in Maine, the child's mother decided she wanted Hazel back. She contacted the sheriff's office who then contacted Wever. Wever refused to hand her over.

Wever then drove to Stoneham, MA and contacted her son, James Richards, had just arrived in Boston from Indiana. Police made contact with the three at a store in Stoneham a short time later.

After being taken into custody, police interviewed Wever and Richards and decided to not charge Wever and granted custody of Hazel to her father James Richards.

Wever did appear in court this morning, but police in Massachusetts say Wever is wanted on other outstanding warrants not related to this case.
