BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The high price of gas has many Mainers feeling a pinch at the pump. Yet area mechanics say there are many ways you can beat that by improving your car's fuel economy.
Here are a few tips to get better gas mileage:
-let your car warm up anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes before you begin your trip as your engine will require more gas to work if its cold rather then being hot.
-stay on top on things under your car's hood. Get your car's air filter changed periodically along with the fuel filter. This can prevent particles from building up in your engine.
-check your tires frequently by making sure they're properly inflated and aligned.
"When a regular oil change comes up...ask to have your tire pressure checked," said John Gladu, who is a service technician at Bennett's Auto Center, "maybe consider an alignment once a year, ask for ail filtration to be checked...some cars have fuel filters others do not, but having those things serviced on a daily basis..ensures that you are getting the most of your fuel."
A final tip to improve your car's gas mileage is pretty simple: drive the posted speed limit especially while you are on the interstate. Mechanics say you should also use cruise control if your car has it.
