LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) - One of the world's oldest Olympic sports will be removed from the games after 2016. The Olympic Commission's executive board made the decision to drop wrestling from the Olympics in 2020 as a way of trimming down the number of "core events."

Past and present Olympic wrestling champions are astonished by the move to end both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, calling it "mind-boggling" and a "tragedy" for the sport. It will likely affect the U.S. medal count as well. Wrestling is historically one of the most successful sport for the U.S. Olympic team. The only other sports in which Americans have won more medals are swimming and track and field.

Officials familiar with this vote say other sports that were considered for elimination include modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey. This move is expected to allow new events to be added to future Olympics games.
