BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The friends and family of a man who was gunned down, along with his girlfriend, in Biddeford remembered him Tuesday night.
It would have been Derrick Thompson's twentieth birthday. He and his girlfriend, 18 year-old Alivia Welch were killed in their apartment. Their landlord, James Pak was indicted earlier this month on two counts of murder in the deaths. Thompson's loved ones decided to hold a fundraiser to help his family pay for funeral expenses. They say they wanted to celebrate his life, rather than focusing on the tragic way he died.
"Everybody was so close to him," His aunt Jessica Ledeux said. "Just a great kid, had a great head on his shoulders, and it was just kind of being able to celebrate him instead of thinking about the loss."
Thompson's mother, Susan Johnson, also attended the event tonight, but asked not to be interviewed. James Pak was also indicted on an attempted murder charge for shooting her. Her family members say she is doing her best to recover from the shooting and move forward.
The money raised at Tuesday's event will help the family with funeral costs.
