BATH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A neighborhood in Bath was shaken early Tuesday morning when a duplex apartment building exploded. One person was found dead in the rubble of the building.

The building, a single story duplex with two one-bedroom apartments, was in the Hyde Park section of Bath. The blast was heard several miles away and woke up the whole neighborhood.

The building exploded around 5:15 AM Tuesday. Fire Chief Steve Hinds says his firefighters arrived on scene minutes later.

The fire was intense but burned out quickly.

State Fire Investigator says that a man living in one of the units left about half an hour before the explosion to head to work. That man, Kenneth Hooper, heard the explosion and doubled back to find the home in rubble. He was apparently overcome and taken to the hospital. He has since been released.

Three other neighbors also had to be hospitalized for injuries from being hit with broken glass or other debris.

Police have not yet released the identity of the person killed in the explosion.

Investigators have not yet determined a cause of the explosion, but they say the apartments were heated with propane and they will start their investigation there.
