Portland Public Services prepares for storm

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland Public Services wasted no time Thursday getting ready for the what's being billed as the largest snowstorm of the season so far.

More than forty trucks will hit the streets in Portland during the storm trying to keep roads clear.  On Thursday, it was all about the preparation to ensure things go smoothly on Friday.

"We're trying to get as much advance work as we can done," Portland City Spokesperson Nicole Clegg said.  "Equipment checks, making sure all our vehicles are ready to go out, and depositing and positioning salt and sand in appropriate locations so we can respond quickly."

It was much of the same in Saco Thursday.  Public Works Director Patrick Fox said twenty to twenty-five plows will be out at any given time during the storm.  He said many of his crews were eager to get back out after a slow January.

"It gets your adrenaline going and this is what we're here to do in the winter.  The guys take it seriously, and they look forward to it," Fox said.

City officials urged people to stay up to date on any parking bans, avoid travel if at all possible, and to use extreme caution during the morning and evening commutes Friday.
