Maj. Gregg Sanborn, Maine Warden Service

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Members of the Maine Warden Service are planning to say goodbye to Major Gregg Sanborn.

He will be remembered during a service celebrating his life at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy on Saturday.

The Major passed away Tuesday after a yearlong battle with a rare form of Lymphoma. His passing did not go unnoticed as state leaders gathered Tuesday night for Governor LePage's State of the State address.

"I had the opportunity to meet him and you can't find a better Mainer, a better father, a better human being, so I ask you all for a moment of silence," Governor Paul LePage said at the start of his speech.

Whether it was leading a search for a missing child, cracking a poaching ring or urging snowmobilers to use caution, Major Sanborn appeared on the news many times over the past two decades carrying out his duties as a Maine Game Warden.

"Everybody understood Gregg Sanborn worked his way up through the ranks of Game Warden. From raw beginner right up to second in command of the Warden Service. I know everybody appreciated that fact," said Chandler Woodcock, Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

A little more than a year ago he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and his long battle against it began. This past summer he found a potential life saving stem cell match. The transplant did not work out, but that process added more than one-thousand new people to the stem cell donor list. It's very possible someday one of those donors could save someone's life.

At just 47-years old Gregg Sanborn's life was cut short by cancer, but it was a life he lived doing what he loved. He called being a game Warden his dream job.

Gregg Sanborn leaves behind a wife and a son. Visiting hours are scheduled for Friday 4:00PM to 6:00PM and 7:00PM to 9:00PM at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro. A celebration of his life will be held there Saturday morning at 11:00AM.
