ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- The University of Maine men's hockey team along with fans joined the fight to end domestic violence. During Sunday's home game fans and players showed support for the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence.
Fans received rally towels reading "There's no excuse for domestic abuse." The special dedication comes during February which is recognized as teen dating violence awareness month.
Margo Batsie with the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence said, "Domestic abuse doesn't know age. There's research that shows people young and old are effected. So it is really important to get the message out to college students. We also like using a sporting event because it's sort of a crowd we don't get to talk to very often."
Nearly 2,000 rally towels were passed out. The men's hockey team plus their coaches wore purple ribbons on their helmets and jackets to help stop domestic and dating violence.
The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence encourages anyone who is being abused or knows someone being abused to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE.
