WEST PARIS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office say we may never know what sparked the flames that destroyed an historic former mill in West Paris.

Investigators returned to the scene of Tuesday's fire on Wednesday. They say that the damage to the building was too extensive to determine a cause.

By the time the fire was extinguished, all that remained of the building were some bits of metal.

Early responders believe that the fire started in the middle of the building, a former mill that was the town's chief employer for nearly 80 years.

In a media release from Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, the Fire Marshals Office says that even though the building was lost, firefighters "did a remarkable job stopping the fire from spreading to a nearby building that contained fireworks."
