NEW DELHI, India (NBC) - Five of the six suspects accused of gang raping a young woman, who eventually died from the injuries, appeared in a special "fast track" court for the beginning of their murder trial on Monday, January 21.
The sixth suspect did not appear in the specially created court because he is said to be a minor. This type of trial was created after the brutal rape sparked outrage across India.
Indian authorities filed murder charges against the men after the 23-year-old victim died later in a hospital from massive internal injuries. Prosecutors say they plan to push the death penalty in the case.
Just weeks after this incident, a second, unrelated gang rape occurred on a bus in New Delhi.
