PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Fire Department is getting a top to bottom review of how well it uses its staff and resources.

The city is paying the Maryland firm Public Safety Solutions about $39,000 to come in, do interviews and review data over the next three weeks. Portland's new fire chief, Jerome LaMoria, says he's asked auditors to pay particular attention to how the city uses its EMS services and to policies and procedures around the fire boat. The fire boat had two costly accidents in recent years that led to a lot of questions about training and protocol.

"And I think having the review come in and look at the response to that, we'll try to put some rest to the fact as to whether the responses were adequate or not. And if they weren't, we're prepared to make it right," LaMoria said.

The consultants are expected to present their review in March.
