PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A Jury has found Joel Hayden Guilty of two counts of murder.
In July of 2011 he gunned down Renee Sandora, the mother of his children, and Trevor Mills, his friend.
Hayden did not have to wait long to learn his fate. When jurors left the courtroom to begin their deliberations, it appears they had little doubt about his guilt. About an hour later they returned with two guilty verdicts.
The state had two key pieces of evidence that were tough to overcome. A 911 recording of a desperate Renee Sandora saying her boyfriend just shot her. The second key was the testimony of an eyewitness to the shootings. Joel Hayden and Renee Sandora's son, who was 7 at the time. He told jurors "I saw my dad shoot my mom".
"The defendant was entitled to a trial. I think it's unfortunate given the strength of the case that he chose to put his son through this, but that is what he chose to do", said Lisa Marchese, an Assistant Attorney General.
The prosecution painted Hayden as an extremely jealous man who constantly accused Sandora of cheating on him, even though there was no evidence of it.
Both sides agreed that they could be ready for sentencing within a couple of weeks. The prosecutor said she would ask for a life sentence.
