PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - A Damariscotta police officer and a woman with her own cheering section were two of the 40 people sworn in as US Citizens Friday morning.

Damariscotta Officer Richard Alexander and Angela Clegg of Topsham both are natives of Great Britain, but have lived here for a long time. Officer Alexander, in fact, has lived in the US since he was 13, and just felt like now might be a good time to become a citizen.

Clegg, a fitness instructor at The Highlands senior living complex, had about two dozen residents come to see her sworn in. They helped her study for her test while she would teach them aerobics.

Clegg has lived in the U.S. for 19 years and her husband and children are all Americans. She says it was important for her to become a citizen now because she wanted to vote.
