AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Maine's Attorney General is warning consumers about phony legal action calls.
The scam involves getting a phone call about being named in legal action. The consumer is advised to call a new number to resolve the issue or there will be a lawsuit. The Attorney General's office says many Mainers have been getting the calls over the last week. He describes the calls as "threatening." Attorney General Schneider also says that calling the number given will only result in more scams.
"If you receive a call claiming that you are being sued, named in a legal action or subpoenaed, hang up immediately, do not call any numbers provided by the caller. Calling the number will only result in more scam calls."
He says while it might be tempting to call the number, it is not worth the risk.
Attorney General Schneider also says "if the incoming call number can be identified, report it to your telephone service provider. If you think you have experienced a threatened legal action scam, call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at (207) 626-8849."
