ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The snow added to a pretty scary situation in Ellsworth Thursday evening, after two children got lost not far from their home.
Rescue crews began looking for the kids off of Branch Pond Road sometime after 5 p.m. Responders say their mother flagged down a state trooper she knew and that's what started the search.
Eventually the two kids were found off a trail in the woods near their home. Their names are not being released but one is an 8-year-old while the other is nine years of age.
Responders say they eventually found snow tracks that led them to the kids. They say both children walked a good distance from the house and in the beginning the search was difficult.
"We would follow prints that would loop back around on themselves or a dead end or go back and so it delayed us in being able to find them," said Sgt. Glenn Moshier of the Ellsworth Police Department, "but once we had a good indication of where they were, we had several officers and also firefighters in there."
The state police, Ellsworth police and fire departments and the Maine Warden Service all had a hand in the search. The children were checked out by an ambulance crew once they were found. Responders say they were scared but appeared to be okay.
