AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Wind power generated in Maine is now producing nearly 500 megawatts, well short of the state's goal for wind generation by 2015.

But new projects that are in conceptual stages, under review or approved but facing challenges could bring the state to half of its wind-power goal.

The Legislature wants 2,000 megawatts of installed wind power capacity by 2015, and 3,000 megawatts by 2020.

Maine is falling short of its goal, with 468 megawatts online now. That's enough to supply the average needs of 175,000 households.

A state report says wind accounted for 3 percent of Maine's electricity generation in 2010. Natural gas provides 49 percent of the fuel to produce power in the state.
