PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- As we near the end of the holiday season, AAA is tracking holiday travel trends, and it reports an increase in overall and air travelers this year.

According to the travel company's latest forecast, an estimated 93 million Americans will travel this holiday season, which is one million more than last year.

About 5.6 million Americans will travel by plane, a 4.5 percent increase from the 5.4 million in 2011.

At the Portland Jetport, Christmas travelers said airfare was significantly cheaper on the holiday itself.

"My brother wanted to fly out yesterday and that was $800, and for me flying out today, was $300," said Jonathan Peters, who was flying out of Portland to Pittsburgh on Christmas.

AAA reports holiday airfare prices have trended downward all over the continental U.S., with the average lowest roundtrip at $203 -- that's three percent less than last year's prices.
