PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A military family is taking care of homeless veterans this Christmas.

Uncle and son team Jake and John Myrick started the Annual Christmas Dinner for Homeless Veterans four years ago, when Jake saw a homeless veteran panhandling on Thanksgiving. The dinner draws hundreds of veterans and members of the homeless community to the Boys and Girls Clubhouse in Portland. They get to spend the afternoon at the clubhouse that ends with a turkey dinner with all the fixings. This year, the event holds special meaning for the family, because John Myrick is deploying to Afghanistan in January. He says he wouldn't spend Christmas any other way.

"They sit down and they'll say their prayers and they'll say their thanks and one by one they'll usually shake our hand and tell us they're so thankful for us," John Myrick said. "And it never gets old. Every single time it's like the first time they tell you."

The food and drinks for the dinner was donated by Hannaford and Oakhurst.
