The book was written by Joseph Conrad, who was born on Dec. 3, 1857.
The story was adapted into the movie "Apocalypse Now," with several plot deviations. While the original was set in colonial Africa, the movie took place during the Vietnam War.
Despite all the differences between them, one area where the two versions match up is during the death scene of the insane warlord Kurtz, played in the movie by Marlon Brando. With his last breath he whispers, "the horror, the horror."
